Memorial Union Building (MTU)

The Memorial Union Building (MUB) was finished on the Michigan Tech campus in 1952. Originally constructed to facilitate the needs of 1169 students, the MUB was renovated in 1987 to accommodate the large increase in enrollment. Used for many things including lounge and study purposes, cafeteria, dining rooms, food services, bookstore, conference rooms, student organization offices, and game rooms, the MUB is always a center of social activity for the Michigan Tech campus.

Background

The idea behind the MUB originated from Michigan Tech alumni who felt that inadequate social facilities existed. The alumni association then proceeded to initiate a national fundraiser that would raise $300,000 towards the construction of a new social activities facility. These funds were then augmented with bonds and loans to fill out the rest of the construction costs. At the time some alumni refused support voicing objections that the construction was a "fool hardy" proposition, especially considering the costs involved. Others, feeling that the state should pay for such buildings, also refused their support, monetary or otherwise. Construction finally finished in 1952, and the alumni associated dubbed it the Memorial Union Building in a tribute to those who served in the armed forces from Michigan Tech, and also in the hopes that this building would unite the campus through the social activities contained therein.
