Reruns of the series have been shown on the SOAPnet cable channel. In Germany, where the show was called Karussell der Puppen (Carousel Of Dolls), the show was more successful than Dallas and Falcon Crest.Fact|date=April 2008 This show marks the debut of actress Nicollette Sheridan.Prior to the TV series, a pilot TV movie had been made and shown in 1982 with Joan Collins, Daryl Hannah and Alexandra Paul in the roles that would be taken by Morgan Fairchild, Nicollette Sheridan and Terry Farrell in the series, respectively.

In the 1982 TV Movie Feature-Length Pilot, many familar faces from TV and Movies such as Joan Collins (TV's Dynasty), Marc Singer (TV's Dallas), Dary Hannah (Splash, Roxanne), Wendy Phillips (TV's Falcon Crest), Joan Hackett (as Daryl Hannah's on-screen Mother), Antonio Fargas (TV's Starsky & Hutch), Craig T. Nelson (Poltergeist), Eric Stoltz (The Fly II) and introducing Alexandra Paul (TV's Baywatch) as well as Jennifer Warren and Jeffrey Richman (the only two actors to return for the 1984 Series). The movie's theme song was 'Paper Doll' written by Mark Snow. When this failed to be picked up for a weekly show, the idea was quickly shelved.

However, in 1984, MGM picked it up again with the show now airing on ABC, recasting several of the original roles from '82 production. Many of these new castmembers were already familiar to viewers. In this new version, a new theme song was used for the two-parter Pilot. Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" served as the theme. When the Series was picked up, a new theme song was used. Three variations of this theme exist and were used prominently for each Episode. For Spanish TV broadcasts a sped-up version was used with the show being retitled as 'Munecas De Papel'.

New cast for this '84 Series included Lloyd Bridges (Airplane!), Brenda Vaccaro (Airport '77, Supergirl), Ray Abruzzo in the Pilot (TV's Dynasty), Larry Linville (TV's M*A*S*H), Nicollette Sheridan (TV's Knots Landing), Terry Farrell (replacing Alexandra Paul), Morgan Fairchild (TV's Friends), Dack Rambo (TV's Dallas), Lauren Hutton (Starflight One), Mimi Rogers (Austin Powers), John Bennett Perry (TV's Falcon Crest), Richard Beymer (TV's Twin Peaks), Anne Schedeen (TV's A.L.F.) Nancy Olson (Airport'75) and with guest appearances from Jamie Rose (TV's Falcon Crest) and Kimberly Foster (TV's Dallas).

However, the success of was only short-lived as the show was one of the most expensive to produce and the Series was cancelled over Christmas 1984 with the cliffhanger of Marjorie's death left being unresolved.
