John Francis O'Brien (
June 13 ,1874 Watertown,Jefferson County, New York -December 25 ,1939 ) was an American lawyer and politician.Life
He was the son of
New York State Attorney General Denis O'Brien. He graduated from Georgetown College (now part ofGeorgetown University ) in 1896, and fromNew York Law School in 1898. He served as Assistant Corporation Council forNew York City . WhenBenjamin N. Cardozo was appointed Chief Judge of theNew York State Court of Appeals in 1927, O'Brien was appointed Associate Judge to fill the vacancy, and was re-elected in 1927 to a full term, but died in office in 1939. Following his death,Albert Conway was appointed by GovernorHerbert Lehman to serve for the remainder of the term.Portrait
