PubCon's roots run far deeper than the web. These really started back in the 1980s with BBS users.
Brett Tabke , aSysOp , running a BBS system on aCommodore 64 would often have meet-n-greets atuser group meetings. That was a common event and done by a lot of other sysops too. Bret Tabke continued this tradition when he founded the Internet forum for webmasters in 1996 called WebmasterWorld. The first WebmasterWorld PubCon was held in London in the year 2000. Over 125 WebmasterWorld members showed up at the Cittie of Yorke Pub in London. This PubCon and the two that followed were user group meeting like events and not a real conference. The first conference style PubCon, PubCon IV was held in Boston, Massachusetts at the Wyndham Tremont Hotel Boston, Wyndham Tremont 821 Washington ST on Saturday April 26th, 2003 [http://www.pubcon.com/boston2003/schedule.htm PubCon IV 2003, Boston] Conference Schedule (and some date errors, showing 2004)] .
