George Watkins (June 4, 1900 - June 1, 1970) was a Major League Baseball player, born in Freestone County, Texas [cite web | url = http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/baseball/mlb/players/45013/ | title = George Watkins Player page | last = | first = |work = Sports Illustrated |date = 2006-09-15 | accessdate = 2007-01-04 ] who owns the record for the highest batting average in their rookie season, batting .373 in his rookie year of by|1930 [cite web | url = http://www.baseball-almanac.com/recbooks/rb_bavg1.shtml | title = Batting Average Records | last = | first = |work = Baseball Almanac|date = | accessdate = 2007-01-04 ] , with the St. Louis Cardinals.
