Elysian Charter School

Elysian Charter School

Elysian Charter School of Hoboken (also known as ECS), is a public charter school located in Hoboken, New Jersey. It was founded in 1997 by a group of Hoboken residents including parents and educators (the "Mile Square Families"). After a charter was granted in January 1997, the school opened in September 1997. Elysian's charter has been renewed twice by the New Jersey Department of Education, first in 2001 and again in December, 2005.

Buildings used by Elysian

There is a proposal to move the school to purpose-built accommodation within a large residential building on Park Avenue. Principals

Lydia Becker was Director from 1997 to June 2005. Lydia Becker died on September 10, 2007, from natural causes. While a search was conducted for a permanent school leader, Melissa Landera and Joanna Weintraub were appointed as Interim Directors. In July, 2006, Carol Stock became the new school Director.

Facts

* There is no annual tuition charge for students.
* The school's charter was once again renewed in 2005.
* In 1997, the school only had grades K-2. Every year, a grade was added, until 2004, when the grade-adding stopped at K-8 (which is the way it is now).
* Initially, students were able to take advantage of the school's inadequate structure; as a result, the school almost failed to renew its 2001 charter. In 2001, the school was referred to as a "playground".
* Elysian Charter is one of only two charter schools in Hoboken; the other is Hoboken Charter School.
* The school's "official" song is "Weave,"
* Mustard Seed School held the Rue 4th floor before Elysian.
* Unlike most schools, teachers are not called by "Mr." or "Ms."
