U.S.Bureau of Land Management The Spring Mountains are a
mountain range of southernNevada in theUnited States , running generally northwest-southeast along the west side of Las Vegas and down to the border withCalifornia . The highest point isMount Charleston , at 11,918 ft (3,362 m). They are asky island . The range is named for the number of springs to be found, many of them in the recesses of Red Rock, which is on the eastern side of the mountains. The Spring Mountains divide thePahrump Valley andAmargosa River basin from the Las Vegas Valley, which drains into the Colorado River, thus the mountains define part of the boundary of theGreat Basin .With an area of about 2,220 km², and a vertical range of nearly two miles, the mountains encompass a wide variety of habitats, and the
biological diversity is probably greater than anywhere else in Nevada. 37 species oftree s are known (more than any other Nevadan range), and 600 species ofvascular plant s have been reported from theRed Rock Canyon National Conservation Area alone. The bases of the mountains are part of theLower Mojavean Zone , dominated bycreosote bush andwhite bursage , then there is aBlackbrush Zone followed by aPygmy Conifer Zone withjuniper ,pinyon pine andmountain-mahogany , topped by aMontane Zone around Mt. Charleston and its connecting ridges.Other major summits include
Bonanza Peak ,McFarland Peak , Mummy Mountain,Griffith Peak ,Bridge Mountain , Mount Wilson, andMount Potosi .Most land in the mountains is owned by the
United States Forest Service and theBureau of Land Management and managed as theSpring Mountains National Recreation Area andRed Rock Canyon National Conservation Area within theHumboldt-Toiyabe National Forest .The area around Mt. Charleston is protected in the
Mount Charleston Wilderness Area . Typically 20-30 degrees cooler than the valleys below, the area is a popular getaway for Las Vegas residents and visitors; theLas Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort lies in Lee Canyon on State Highway 156.References
