- Gold Coast Rollers
The Gold Coast Rollers were an Australian
basketball team, that played inGold Coast, Queensland , in the National Basketball League. The team was originally named the "Gold Coast Cougars" before being renamed the "Rollers" in1992 . The team was one of only two teams from the state ofQueensland when it first joined the NBL (theBrisbane Bullets being the other). The Rollers were one of three teams (theGeelong Supercats and theHobart Devils being the other two) that had their NBL licenses revoked by the league directors in1996 due to financial difficulties. While not the first time teams had folded in the league, the sudden departure of the Devils, Supercats and Rollers signified that the NBL's successful era (between late 1980s and early 1990s) was truly over.In 2007/08, thanks to the work of former Rollers coach
David Claxton [http://www.nbl.com.au/default.aspx?s=newsdisplay&aid=4240] , a new Gold Coast team, theGold Coast Blaze , entered the NBL.Only one player to have played for the Gold Coast Rollers remains in NBL competition today:
Ben Castle , who currently plays for theWollongong Hawks .Honour Roll
