It covers most of theNegev desert, as well as theArabah valley. The population of the Southern District is 1,002,400. It is 86% Jewish and 14% Arab (mostly Muslim). The district capital isBeersheba , whilst the largest city isAshdod . Beersheba's dormitory towns ofOmer ,Meitar , andLehavim are all relatively affluent, whilst thedevelopment town s (includingSderot ,Netivot , andOfakim ) and the seven Bedouin cities are lower on the socio-economic scale.
