Gemeenschapsonderwijs

Gemeenschapsonderwijs ( community education ) is the state provided school system in Belgium. The schools are widely spread around the country and are most commonly named atheneum + name of village or city. Example: Royal Atheneum of Brasschaat. All of the schools are also allowed to be named royal (koninklijk).

Most Atheneums where build in the 1960's during the “scholenstrijd” (schoolstruggle) in Belgium. There is a free choice of religion at the schools and they generally receive more money then catholic schools.The oldest and most beautiful atheneum is the atheneum of Antwerp at the main bus station.
