- Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company
Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company (GLD&D) is an American company providing services in dredging, beach nourishment, and marine construction, currently the largest such provider in the United States [http://www.gldd.com/Upload%5CPDF%5CFinancials%5CQtrlyEarnings%5C2006_3rd_Quarter_Earnings_Release.pdf] . The company was founded in 1890 as the partnership of William A. Lydon & Fred C. Drews, coming under its current name in 1905, and is currently based in Oak Brook, Illinois.
In 1992, a barge operated by GLD&D while driving new pilings for the Kinzie Street Bridge in Chicago accidentally punched into an unused service tunnel passing beneath the river at that point. The tunnel flooded, in turn flooding the basements of many buildings in downtown Chicago; the event is commonly known as the Chicago Flood.
