John Eyre (cricketer, born 1944)

John Eyre (cricketer, born 1944)

John Eyre (born June 13, 1944) was an English cricketer. He was a right-handed batsman and a right-arm medium-pace bowler. He was born in Glossop.

Eyre's first-class cricketing career began in 1963, when he made his debut for Derbyshire at the front end of a season which saw the Peakites finish at the bottom of the County Championship table. Eyre made a duck on his debut, and was immediately thrust down five places in the batting order, where he saw no action.

He played just one match in the following season, but was a first-team choice throughout the next three years, as Derbyshire performed capably in the County Championship. He was abruptly out of the Derbyshire team in the middle of the 1967 season, and did not play first-class cricket again. He continued in the Second XI until 1968.

Eyre was the opening batsman for Derbyshire throughout the mid-'60s, though he had a fairly low first-class average of just approaching 15 for the team. Eyre's son, Damien Eyre, played Second XI cricket for Derbyshire between 1983 and 1990. Eyre only obtained one wicket during his four-year first-class career, at an average of 248.00.
