Vere Harmsworth Professor of Imperial and Naval History

Vere Harmsworth Professor of Imperial and Naval History

The Vere Harmsworth Professorship of Imperial and Naval History is one of the senior professorships in history at the University of Cambridge.

Founded in 1919 by a donation of £20,000 from Harold Harmsworth, 1st Viscount Rothermere, in memory of his son killed at the Battle of Ancre, it was initially entitled simply 'Professorship of Naval History', with the title changing to its present form in 1933. Among the holders of this prestigious chair, only Admiral Sir Herbert Richmond has been a recognized specialist in naval history, while the others have tended to be scholars of imperial history.
