Basil Wenceslas

Basil Wenceslas

Basil Wenceslas is a fictional character from the Saga of Seven Suns series of novels created by Kevin J. Anderson.

Biography

Basil Wenceslas was made Chairman of the Terran Hanseatic League in 2406 A.D and supervised the reign of the puppet kings Frederick and Peter. Although elderly, Wenceslas kept himself looking relatively young with expensive anti-aging techniques and although he did have a relationship with the Theroc-born Sarein he kept himself out of any arrangement he felt might complicate his life. Basil was less hedonistic than previous Chairmen such as Miguel Byron and - despite attending the ignition of Oncier and later travelling to Ildira to have a meeting with the Mage-Imperator Cyroc'h - preferred to keep himself out of the limelight, running things quietly from the Hansa Headquarters on Earth.

During the reign of King Frederick the Chairman treated the king rather poorly: ridiculing the questions and opinions Frederick offered in council meetings and berating him over instances such as Frederick's mistake of calling Lanyan 'Lanson' on live television. Despite this Wenceslas much preferred King Frederick to the successor King Peter whose rebellious attitude made life difficult for Basil Wenceslas to a point where he had to drug the King for his coronation, imply threats to the life of his wife Estarra and in one instance Basil tried to rid himself of King Peter by planting a bomb onboard the royal yacht.

Chairman Wenceslas was ruthless in other circumstances as well: ordering the deaths of Raymond Aguerra's family and planning the assassination of Raymond and Estarra as well as Prince Adam - a proposed heir to King Frederick before Aguerra.
