After attending university inLos Angeles he worked with Jerry Gray and thenArt Pepper . Montrose also did arrangements forClifford Brown . He became known forcool jazz and/orWest coast jazz . heroin addiction became a liability and by the time he had overcome it his style of jazz was no longer popular.
