Japan esearchitect . He was born in Kanagawa and graduated from the school of engineering at theUniversity of Tokyo in 1979. He then moved toNew York for further studies atColumbia University in 1985-86. In 1987 he founded the "Spatial Design" studio and, in 1990, "Kengo Kuma & Associates". He has also been a professor at the faculty of environmental information atKeio University , from 1998 to 1999.Kuma's stated goal is to "recover the tradition of Japanese buildings" and to reinterpret it for the 21st century. In 1997 he won the prestigious Architectural Institute of Japan Award.
