callsign_meaning = "Fox"|KJFX (95.7 FM, "The Fox") is a commercial
radio station located inFresno, California , and owned by Wilks Broadcasting, LLC. KJFX airs aclassic rock music format.History
The origin of this station goes back to legendary radio owner, Gene Chenault. He owned the the "Boss Radio" KYNO (AM 1300). The FCC granted a new license to the frequency 95.5. Call letters were KPHD. The first music to be played was the automated "Hit Parade '70" in early 1970. Boss Radio was on the AM side and the Drake-Chenault provided programming kicked off the FM. 95.5 KPHD would move up the dial to 95.7 eventually. KJFX was originally an automated
country music format adopting thecall letters of KYNO-FM. The format was later changed to rock format adopting thecall letters of KPHD, branded as "Rock 96 FM". In the 1980s, the format was changed toTop 40 branded as "96 FM" to compete with KBOS andKMGX . In the late 1980s, the branding was changed to "Hot 96".In February 1990, the format was changed to a
classic rock music format with a change to its presentcall letters , KJFX.The Fox in 2008
A consistent favorite in the community, due in no small part to the presence of the nationally syndicated
Bob and Tom morning show (airing “live” Monday through Friday & a Saturday morning “Best of” edition). The Fox remains the number one music station with men inCentral California despite the emergence of several similarly formatted stations in recent years.The weekday on-air staff is rounded out by:
Carter (3pm to 7pm) is a respected local personality known for her connection to Central California’s motorcycle/bike clubs and her fierce loyalty to KJFX.
Spot (7pm to 10pm) is known for his audio engineering and extensive knowledge of popular music, Spot’s weekend shows at the Lucky 13, a local bar/club and live music venue, are one of the best known features of Central California’s local music scene.
Midday (10am-3pm) personality Sam Kane has been the cause of some controversy, beginning with an April Fools’ prank on 4/1/2008, and subsequent forays into
performance art -style digressions from regular programming. Despite the unconventional approach to a traditionally low-key day-part KJFX continues to dominate their declared demographic.As of June 2008 programming features on KJFX include:
“Outlaw 80’s” Monday through Friday 8pm to 9pm – an “80’s Hair & Glam Metal” hour.
“Get the Led Out” Monday through Friday at 7pm – a four song set of
Led Zeppelin ’s lesser known work.“Fox Album Concert” Wednesdays at 10pm – Spot extends his regular shift to feature a complete album, generally playing a vinyl album (though CDs are frequently used, also) with limited commercial interruption.
