Serbian Cyrillic : Стеван Петровић Книћанин, born in 1807 inKnić ,Serbia died in 1855 inBelgrade , Serbia) was aSerbia n voivod and commander of the Serbian volunteer squads in theSerbian Vojvodina during the 1848/1849 revolution.He was born in
Knić nearKragujevac (hence his nickname). During the rule ofMiloš Obrenović , Knićanin was a commissioner of theJasenica municipality, and in 1839 a commissioner of theSmederevo district. Since he supported "ustavobranitelji" (the defenders of the constitution), he was expelled fromSerbia in 1840-1841. From August 1848, Knićanin was a commander of the Serbian volunteer squads in theSerbian Vojvodina . His military knowledge was expressed in more occasions, especially in the battles nearPančevo andVršac . After his return to Serbia in May 1849, Knićanin was awarded with the title of voivod. The village ofKnićanin in the Serbian province ofVojvodina was named after him.Literature
