Zhambyl Zhabayev (28 February 1846 in
Semirechye – 22 June 1945 in Alma-Ata; Kazakh: Жамбыл Жабаев; also known as Jambul Jabayev) was a Kazakh traditional folksinger (Kazakh: "akyn ").Many patriotic, pro-revolution and pro-Stalin poems and songs were attributed to Zhambyl in the 1920s and 1930s and were widely circulated in the Soviet Union. It has been claimed that some of them were not in fact Zhambyl's work and were actually written in Russia, by Russians, but labeled as translations from the Kazakh.fact|date=February 2008
The Kazakh city of
Taraz was named after Zhambyl from 1938 to 1997.Zhambyl Province , in which Taraz is located, still bears his name.References
