Seán MacManus (Irish politician)

Seán MacManus (often incorrectly spelt Sean McManus) (born Blacklion, County Cavan, Republic of Ireland) is an Irish Sinn Féin politician [ [http://www.sinnfein.ie/gaelic/elections/candidate/21 Alderman Sean MacManus] ] .

Background

MacManus originally from Gubaveeney, near Blacklion, County Cavan, moved to London in the 1960s to find work, there he met and married Glenfarne, County Leitrim native, Helen McGovern. In 1976 he returned to Ireland and settled in the Maugheraboy area of Sligo Town, County Sligo so that the boys could be educated in Ireland. [Unknown. MacManus is still based in Maugheraboy and was secretary of the County Sligo Anti-H-Block Committee in the 1980s. In 2000, MacManus became Mayor of Sligo, the first Sinn Féin Mayor in the Republic of Ireland since the beginning of the The Troubles in 1969 [ [http://archives.tcm.ie/sligoweekender/2003/06/24/story13106.asp Sinn Féin mayor for Sligo] ] . He was also involved in the negotiations leading to the Good Friday Agreement.

Republican family

MacManus' son, Chris MacManus, is also a representative within Sligo Borough Council, and a member of Sinn Féin's national executive, the Ard Comhairle. His eldest son, Joseph MacManus, was killed on active service for the Provisional Irish Republican Army in Belleek, County Fermanagh in February 1992.
