History

*In 1868, a department for training mechanical engineers was set up in Stuttgart at the Königlich-Württembergischen Baugewerkeschule - the royal Württemberg school for construction. In 1914 the royal Württemberg construction school relocated to Esslingen, and with it around 600 young students. In 1938, the construction school was renamed as die Staatliche Ingenieurschule Esslingen, the Esslingen State School for Engineering and in January 1971, the engineering school developed into a university for applied sciences.

*The Soziale Frauenschule (Social Women's’ School) of the Schwäbischen Frauenverein (Swabian Women's’ Association) was started in 1917 by a foundation established by Queen Charlotte of Wuerttemberg. This was the forerunner to the University of Applied Science for Social Work.

*In 1998, the Esslingen University of Applied Sciences offered the first master's degree course in English and founded the faculty "Graduate School". The Graduate School now runs and organises three post-graduate study programmes in English - the MBA in International Industrial Management [http://www.fht-esslingen.de/en/30349] , MSc in Automotive Engineering [http://www.fht-esslingen.de/en/30361] and MSc in Information Technology and Automation Systems [http://www.fht-esslingen.de/en/30924]

*On 1st October 2006, the Esslingen Universities of Applied Sciences of Technology and Social Work were merged and are now a single entity known as Hochschule Esslingen in German. The English name of the university is the same.

Campus

* Hilltop Campus - Hochschulzentrum (HZE)
* City Campus - Stadtmitte
*Göppingen Campus

The Esslingen University of Applied Sciences has three locations: the main city campus is right in the middle of downtown and is also referred to as “der Stall” (the stable). This is not because the old neo-classical style building or the futuristic new building from 1992 remotely resemble a stable, but because the original school was located directly across from the royal riding stables of the time. The hilltop campus is known as the Acropolis. The huge concrete block from the 1960s is prominently situated on the city’s northern hills and provides a good view of Esslingen and the entire Neckar Valley. The new campus in Göppingen is 23 kilometers away. The Goeppingen site is home to the faculties for mechatronics and electrical engineering, as well as the bachelor study programme business information management.cite web | title=Studying in Esslingen | work= | url=http://www.campus-germany.de/english/4.22.3.2014.html | accessdate=Apr 18 | accessyear=2007 ]

Traditions

Kandelmarsch

This bizarre and unique feature of the Esslingen University of Applied Sciences is an old, ritual parade through the city conducted when students complete their degrees. The professors lead the parade in old-fashioned horse carriages with the students following behind on foot, dressed elegantly in tailcoats and top hats – and with a mug of beer in their hands. After the diplomas have been handed out in a special celebration, notes from lectures and seminars are burned, the students set out on a tour of the city’s bars and pubs. They are allowed to drink as much as they want for free on this special evening. [cite web
