2006 Kuril Islands tsunami

2006 Kuril Islands tsunami

The 2006 Kuril Islands tsunami was a small tsunami which served as a test of disaster-preparedness.

On November 15, 2006 at about 11:15 AM UTC, a major earthquake struck in the Kuril Islands (disputed between Japan and Russia.) The magnitude of the quake was estimated as 8.1 and later revised to 8.3.

At about 11:45 UTC, tsunami warnings were issued in Japan for the north coasts of Hokkaidō and Honshū, and a number of towns in this area were evacuated. Tsunami warnings, advisories and watches were also issued for the coastal areas of Alaska, Hawaii, parts of British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and California. However, a large tsunami did not materialize. Waves about 50 cm high were reported in Northern Hokkaidō and the Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia. Six hours later, tsunami waves up to nearly convert|5|ft|m high caused by the quake crashed into Crescent City, California and Santa Cruz, California, causing damage to boats. No injuries or damage were reported from Japan.
