Controversy
Yaw Shin Leong was embroiled in a controversy when he revealed in his blog that he voted for the ruling People’s Action Party candidate in the 2006 General Election despite being an opposition candidate himself. In his blog that he revealed he voted for the PAP’s Teo Ho Pin who was contesting the single-member constituency (SMC) against Singapore Democratic Party chairman and former opposition MP Ling How Doong. For this controversial action, he was called a political opportunist and hypocrite. He was also criticised him for sending conflicting signals. Critics argued he could have spoilt the vote by neither voting for the ruling People’s Action Party or the Singapore Democratic Party.
Two weeks after the controversy surfaced, Yaw changes his position and regreted the voting for PAP candidates. In his blog, he said it contradicted the opposition's efforts in urging voters to value the choice provided by opposition candidates. Yaw added he would not vote for his MP, Dr Teo Ho Pin, at the next election, and urged Singaporeans to 'vote in solidarity to deny the PAP'.
