- Amazing Heroes
"Amazing Heroes" is a discontinued
magazine about thecomic book medium which was published byFantagraphics Books from1981 to1992 . It was published twice a month for many years, then monthly beginning in 1989. The magazine ran for 203 issues. The first dozen issues were magazine sized, while the rest of the run was comic book sized.Unlike its companion title, "
Comics Journal ", "Amazing Heroes" took a somewhat lighter tone to its examination of comics from a hobbyist's point of view as opposed to an intellectual one. Issues tended to have more of a "fan" approach rather than an "analytical" approach, running "Hero Histories" of various characters/features, previews of upcoming series, and a lighthearted letters page (although the last did get very heavy on occasion). The regular content included industry news, comics creator interviews, in-depth histories of comic book characters and reviews.
It also featured, among other humor features, the regular comic strip "The Cartoonist" by
Teri Sue Wood .There were regular special editions for previews of upcoming comics to be published and swimsuit editions in which various comic artists do individual pictures of characters, both established and original in
bikini s and similar beach apparel. The Amazing Heroes Preview Special appeared twice a year, presenting previews of all comics slated to appear over the next six months. These were extra-sized issues and were often squarebound. Many issues of AHPS also contained joke entries. The editors did fluctuate between publishing these as separately numbered specials and special issues of the regular series itself.
