- The Thin White Duke
The Thin White Duke,
David Bowie 's1976 persona, is primarily identified with his "Station to Station " album (released that year) and mentioned by name in the title track. At first glance, the Duke appeared more "normal" than Bowie's previous incarnations, wearing a stylish, cabaret -style wardrobe, but the massive amounts ofcocaine the rock star allegedly consumed during this period made his personality, or at least the personality he displayed duringinterviews , more alarming than it had ever been. At this time in his life, he said that he lived on "red pepper s,cocaine andmilk ".David Buckley (1999). "Strange Fascination - David Bowie: The Definitive Story": pp.258-275]As his
drug habit ate away at his physical and mental health, Bowie decided to move fromL.A. toWest Berlin , where he began recording the groundbreaking so-calledBerlin Trilogy ("Low", ""Heroes" ", and "Lodger") withBrian Eno .It is also reported that bowie was a the time heavily influenced by the occult: and it is believed that he kept and stored his urine for the fear that it might be used against him in occult rituals. It is also understood that he remembers almost nothing about the recording of the station to station album, such was the extent of his drug abuse at the time. The much miss understood "Nazi" salute which adorned much of the British press (Bowie on return to England, greeted his fans in a black open top Mercedes, and "waved" at the crowd) can mostly be attributed to his interest in the German "SS"' preoccupation with the holy grail and the occult. It is reported that the Nazi's sent troops to England prior to the onset of the second world war in an attempt to find the artifact. This intrigued Bowie's drug fueled interest in such matters, and is not believed to hint at racist beliefs.External links
