Robert Bridgeman, 2nd Viscount Bridgeman

Major-General Robert Clive Bridgeman, 2nd Viscount Bridgeman , KBE, CB, DSO, MC, JP, (1 April 1896 – 17 November 1982) was a British peer and soldier.

The son of the 1st Viscount Bridgeman and Caroline Beatrix Parker, he was born in London and baptised at St Paul's Cathedral.

Bridgeman served in the Rifle Brigade during the First World War and was decorated with the Military Cross. In 1921, he reached the rank of Captain and in 1932 that of Brevet Major. From 1932 to 1934, Bridgeman was Brigade Major of the 7th Infantry Brigade, becoming Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel one year later.

He was General Staff Officer of the War Office between 1935 and 1937 and fought also in the Second World War, where he was decorated with the Distinguished Service Order in 1940. From 1941 to 1944, he was Director-General of the Home Guard and the Territorial Army, and Deputy Adjutant-General of the War Office in 1944 and 1945.

Bridgeman succeeded to his father's title on 14 August 1935. He was invested as a Companion of Order of the Bath in 1944, and as a Commander and Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1954. He was Honorary Major-General and Honorary Colonel of the 4th Battalion, King's Shropshire Light Infantry. In 1951, Lord Bridgeman became Justice of Peace and Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire.

Family

Lord Bridgeman was married to Mary Kathleen Lane Fox, daughter of the 1st Baron Bingley, from 12 June 1930. They had three daughters:

*Hon. Anne Caroline Mary Bridgeman (b. 1932), married Reverend Nicolas David Stacey, son of David Henry Stacey on 19 July 1955
*Hon. Susan Elizabeth Bridgeman (b. 1935), married David Kenneth Dudley Foster, son of Kenneth Dudley Foster on 1 August 1962
*Hon. Mary Selina Bridgeman (b. 1940), married Jeremy David Bagot Bayliss, son of Edmund Bayliss on 14 July 1962

He was succeeded by his nephew Robin Bridgeman, the son of his younger brother Geoffrey.
