Lancashire Aero Club

The Lancashire Aero Club is the oldest established Flying Club in the United Kingdom.

History

The club was initiated after, in 1922, John F. Leeming and a group of friends started building a glider in Bowdon near Altrincham Cheshire. The club has been based at Alexandra Park Aerodrome (1924), Woodford Aerodrome (1924-1939) and Barton Aerodrome (1947-2007). (The club's planes were impounded during World War II.)

On 5 July, 1930, a member of the club, Winifred Brown, won the King's Cup Air Race hosted at Barton Aerodrome, flying an Avro Avian biplane built at Woodford.
