It was written by Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, and John Shanks.

"Have a Nice Day" preceded the the September 20 release of the album "Have A Nice Day," which also included the hit single.

Lyrical Content

"Have a Nice Day" is a song of defiance and rising against adversity, its strong lyrics reinforced by heavy guitar riffs with powerful vocals. "There's obviously a sense of irony when you say it. You can say it one way and you can take it another way", says Jon Bon Jovi about the song's title [http://umusic.ca/bonjovi/] . On the documentary on the Live from Atlantic City Bonus DVD, Richie Sambora says that the title of the album is meant to be said aggressively, likening it to the way that Clint Eastwood said "Have a nice day" in his earlier movies. To stress the emotion, he said "Have a nice day," followed by giving the finger.

Jon wrote the song in the wake of John Kerry's unsuccessful 2004 presidential bid, for whom Jon had been a strong campaigner. The line "Take a look around you nothing's what it seems / We're living in the broken home of hopes and dreams" reflects Jon's thoughts on the political state of America.

The song has proven to be popular among Bon Jovi fans and was staple performance during the band's 2005/2006 Have A Nice Day Tour. However, it was missing from some concerts on the Lost Highway Tour, replaced by "Have a Nice Day"'s second and more successful single "Who Says You Can't Go Home".

It was also featured as one of the six live tracks on the promotional album "Live from the Have a Nice Day Tour", released through Wal-Mart.

Melinda Doolittle covered the song during Bon Jovi Week on American Idol (season 6).
