- Free Home, Georgia
Free Home is an unincorporated community in the eastern part of Cherokee County, Georgia,
United States . Centered at the intersection ofstate highway s 20 and 372, the once-rural community has seen rapid suburbanization of the area during the 2000s. It is home to Free Home Elementary School.Free Home is about halfway between Ball Ground to the north and Milton to the south-southeast on Georgia 372 (also called Free Home Highway and Birmingham Highway, for the community now within Milton). On Cumming Highway (Georgia 20), it is also about halfway between Canton (west) and Cumming (east), the Cherokee and Forsyth
county seat s. The Little River begins as a smallstream just southeast of Free Home, near Free Home Road.Well-known resident
Josh Holloway , an actor in the TV series "Lost", grew up in Free Home. One of his earliest jobs was to pick-up deadchicken s at a broiler chicken farm. He played basketball for the Free Home Rockets and later for the Cherokee High School Warriors. The High School was located some 16 miles from where the Free Home students caught the bus and the ride was most uncomfortable with no air conditioning and overcrowded buses. Holloway was a member of the Free Home Boy Scout Troup Pack 469, which was started by Holloway's parents and other concerned parents of the period. Holloway still has a love of camping that was initially fostered by those Boy Scout outings. The Free Home dialect is a smooth southern appalachian accent that is distinctly different than other parts of Cherokee County or the south. Holloway's Sawyer espouses it to a tee. His character Sawyer's accent is instantly recognizable as a Free Home dialect to those who would know the difference. During his developing years, Free Home was a somewhat rough and tumble community full of bravado filled characters that give Holloway a never ending well of material to adapt for the Sawyer character he now plays.Holloway grew up on a dirt road riding horses bareback and going barefoot till school started in the fall, fishing in small creeks for Brim and Bluegill, and walking the roads to look for soda bottles to trade in at a nickel apiece. Free Home can be proud of Josh because he is a product of the Free Home Community where many "Sawyer's" walk and work every day.
