- Westgate Mall (Brockton)
Westgate Mall is a
shopping mall in the city ofBrockton, Massachusetts . It is the oldest enclosed shopping mall in the state. The 600,000 square foot mall opened in 1963 and was substantially renovated in 2000, reversing a trend of nearly a decade of decline wherein nearly all of the stores had vacated the center. Nearby malls, including
South Shore Plaza andSilver City Galleria , dominated the market in the past 15 years, but the Westgate Mall today has repositioned itself as a smaller, more convenient alternative and as a result business has improved. The center also has substantial development on its outlots, including nearby outlets of
Lowe's ,Papa Gino's , a formerChuck E. Cheese ,Texas Roadhouse ,Modell's and a cinema turned intoDick's Sporting Goods andToys "Я" Us andWal-Mart .The mall's original south anchor store, originally a Boston-based Gilchrist's, and later a Jordan Marsh and Macy's, was torn down. Construction started on a new 12-screen multiplex cinema (replacing the old south anchor store) in the spring of 2008. The theatre should be completed by mid-2009.
