WAMA (band)

WAMA (Arabic:واما) is an Egyptian band that was started in 1998 as a boy band. It consists of four young men who all majored in music: Mohammed Nour, Nader, Ahmed Fahmi and Ahmed El Shami. They all graduated from the Cairo Conservatoire in 1998. All four boys were originally friends but Mohammed and Ahmed Fahmi decided to start a band; however, Nader and Ahmed El Shamee confronted them and asked to join.

By 1999, the boys had come up with the name WAMA, which according to them stands for the initials of their nicknames. They started composing and writing their own songs and their first song was "Hobha Gowa Albein" (Her Love Is In Two Hearts).

In 2003, "Ya Leil" was released, the album was a major success in the Middle East. The band faced some harsh criticism. Some people claimed that they were imitating the Backstreet Boys in their first video. Their latest hit, which was released in 2006, is "Zay Ma Bahlem Beek" (As I Dream Of You), directed by Karim Abou Zeid. He also directed the hit single "Kan Nefsi" released in October 2005. At the same time, Mohammed also released a solo album.
