Buffalo Common Council manMarc Coppola as their nominee in the special election over Buffalo Councilman Antoine Thompson to fill a vacant Senate seat. Thompson subsequently challenged and defeated incumbent Senator Coppola as well as his cousin Former State Sen.Al Coppola in the September 2006 Democratic Primary for a full two-year term in the Senate. He then defeated Marc Coppola again in the General election where Coppola ran as an Independent.He is the Ranking Minority Member of the Senate Environmental Conservation Committee. He is the former Ranking Minority Member of the Senate Cities Committee,cite web|url=http://www.nyssenate60.com/legislation.asp|accessdate=April 6|accessyear=2007|title=2007 - 2008 Legislative Session] which oversees all legislation impacting the state's 62 incorporated cities and urban policy. This position was held by his two immediate predecessors in the Senate, Byron Brown and Marc Coppola.
