Kanchipuram in present-dayTamil Nadu state,India . It was waged betweenTipu Sultan , (also known as the Tiger of Mysore), and Col William Baille of the East India Company. The army of the East India Company was virtually wiped out, this was the first and serious blow that the British had encountered in India [http://www.tipusultan.org/wars2.htm#2] ; Baille and many of his officers were captured and taken to Tipu Sultan'scapital , Srirangapattana. Sir Hector Munro, the victor at theBattle of Buxar , where he defeated three rulers of India (Mughal EmperorShah Alam , Oudh NawabShuja-ud-daula and the BengalNawab Mir Qasim ) retreated toSt. Thomas Mount , abandoning his artillery in the pool of Conjeevaram temple.
