Christopher Marlowe (composer)

Christopher Marlowe (composer)

Christopher Marlowe is one of New York City's most sought-after music director and pianist in the cabaret circle.

Background

Chris Marlowe was born in Washington, D.C., on January 2, 1958. He earned a BM in piano performance from Catholic University.

Musical career

Following his move to New York City in 1981, despite an initial intention to study with Gil Kalish at Stony Brook, Marlowe immediately fell under the wing of cabaret producer Bruce Hopkins. Under Hopkins, Marlowe got a chance to use his classical and jazz training to bring a new sound to New York’s small clubs. By 1985, he had established himself as a music director, arranger, writer, and pianist.

Chris Marlowe was principally associated with the singer Nancy LaMott and served as her arranger and pianist for eleven years until her death at age 43 in 1995.

From 1997 to 2004, Marlowe conducted and arranged for Kathie Lee Gifford at large and small venues around the country, on television, and on several recordings, including her "concept album", "Born for You".

Most recently, he worked with Bernadette Peters on her pre-Broadway one-woman show, music directed David Zippel's "All Girl Band" at Joe's Pub at the Public Theater in New York, and music directed "It's Better With a Band" at The Prince Music Theater in Philadelphia.

Through his career till the present, Marlowe has music directed and/or arranged and co-produced nearly 40 CDs of 25 different vocalists.

Personal Projects

His writing and best loved arrangements, written to the lyrics of Lisa Viggiano while she was awaiting the birth of her first son, were compiled on the CD, "Keepsake Lullabies".
