Isidor Ascheim (1891-1968) (variant names Isidor Aschheim, Izidor Aschheim) was a German-born
Israeli painter and printmaker born in Posen (Poznań),Prussia (present-dayPoland ) in 1891.Ascheim was raised in an Orthodox family and served during
World War I . He immigrated to Palestine in 1940 and settled inJerusalem . During the years 1919-23, Ascheim studied under theGerman Expressionist Otto Mueller inBreslau and was influenced byErich Heckel of theDie Brücke (The Bridge) group. In Israel, Ascheim became a teacher at the renownedBezalel Academy in Jerusalem, and he was nominated its director for a number of years. Ascheim won theDizengoff Prize in 1951, theJerusalem Prize for Art in 1955, and participated in the 1956Venice Biennale . He was married to the Israeli painterMargot Lange-Ascheim .Ascheim "belongs to a generation of artists whose whole repertoire is based on a direct impression of nature, life and the human form. His oeuvre represents a continuous connection with nature and the human figure, usually executed with a dark palette, the legacy of his German Expressionist roots."
