Spengler Cup is an annual ice hockey tournament held in
Davos ,Switzerland .Spengler Cup is the second oldest international
ice hockey club team tournament in the world after theStanley Cup playoffs. The tournament, entry to which is by invitation, is hosted by the Swiss teamHC Davos . The tournament is played each year in Davos, Switzerland, betweenChristmas andNew Year's Day . It features club teams from around the world. Team Canada are the current Spengler Cup champions.History
The Cup was first awarded in 1923 to the
Oxford University Ice Hockey Club , composed of Canadian students, most notably futurePrime Minister of Canada Lester Pearson . The tournament was then dominated byCzechoslovakia n andSoviet teams between 1965 and 1983. In 1984 Team Canada - predominantly made up of Canadians playing inEurope - began participating and has since won the Cup eleven times.From its inception until 1978, the tournament was played on an outdoor rink. The outdoor rink still exists outside the indoor arena, and is one of the largest outdoor rinks in the world. Starting in 1978, all tournament games have been played indoors.
Trophy
The current cup consists of a golden globe supported by silver hockey sticks on a round base. The trophy is named after the founder Dr.
Carl Spengler of Davos.Spengler Cup winners
