Hamilton AcademicalBobby Shearer (
December 29 1931 –November 5 2006 ) was a Scottish professional footballer. He represented Scotland twice in 1961, in games against the English and Irish football leagues and won four full international caps.Shearer, a right-back, played 407 times for Rangers between 1955 and 1965, including a run of 165 consecutive games. He previously played for Hamilton Academical, his hometown club. His combative playing style led to him being nicknamed Captain Cutlass.
He made his full Scotland debut on
April 15 1961 in the 9-3 defeat against England at Wembley, it was said that as the colour of the ball in this game was Orange, Bobby refused to kick it and the Scotland Goalkeeper, Frank Haffey of Celtic, refused to touch it. He won further caps against the Republic of Ireland (twice) and Czechoslovakia in World Cup qualifiers the following month, his final game being a 4-0 defeat inBratislava .Shearer captained Rangers to their second domestic treble in 1963-64. In all, he captured five league championships, three Scottish Cups and four League Cups during his time at Ibrox.
After leaving Ibrox, Shearer moved to Queen of the South as player-coach before being appointed manager of ill-fated Third Lanark in 1966. When the "Hi Hi" folded in 1967 he moved to Hamilton Academical, and served as their manager between October 1970 and
October 2 1971 .He died following a short illness on
November 5 2006 , aged 74.External links
