She was commissioned into service onMay 9 1942 under the command of OberleutnantHans-Hartwig Trojer .She made a total of 5 war patrols in the Atlantic Ocean against Allied shipping. During these patrols U221 sank 11 ships for a total of 65,589 GRT and damaged one ship.
On
September 29 ,1943 U221 was attacked by a British Halifax of the southwestern Coast of Ireland. The Halifax was shot down, but U221 was sunk. All 50 crew members were killed.
