The Bottoms

The Bottoms is a neighborhood in Columbus, Ohio. It is the area immediately west of Downtown Columbus. The area contains the Franklinton neighborhood, and is in West Columbus. It is the area enclosed by I-70 on the west and south, I-670 on the north, and Route 315 on the east. The Bottoms is in the 43215 ZIP Code. The neighborhood originally got its name from its lower elevation, as it is right next to the Hilltop. Recently, however, the name has stuck due to the crime rate of the area. The area is in a floodplain, because of this the Franklinton Floodwall was built.

In order to convey a more accurate and updated description of the historical neighborhood of Franklinton, I feel it is necessary to include the "Key Messages For Franklinton", as outlined by the Franklinton Area Commission.

* Though Franklinton is the last downtown neighborhood to be redeveloped, it is actually the birth place of Columbus, settled 15 years before the city itself.

* Since the completion of the floodwall, the community redevelopment has included more than 40 residential projects, a new firehouse, two new school, new residential dorms at Mount Carmel Medical Center West and the exploration of countless commercial projects.

* This historic neighborhood is not only directly adjacent to downtown, but also has easy and rapid access to all of Columbus' major highways.

* The neighborhood is a recovering flood area with an enduring community network, a strong sense of history and a power vision for its future.

30 Days

The neighborhood appeared on the FX TV show 30 Days when the series did a show on living on minimum wage. This is likely because of the poverty suffered in The Bottoms. The neighborhood is generally lower/lower-middle class.

Crime

Crime seems to be very high in the Franklinton and Bottoms area, as it is in most of the west side. The Bottoms is in Precinct 8 of the Columbus Division of Police.
