OBE (born 13 September 1890) was born and educated inCambridge . DuringWorld War I he was on active service with theSuffolk Yeomanry inGallipoli and Egypt before being transferred to France as a lieutenant in theMachine Gun Corps Cavalry. In 1917, he was wounded and invalided home.After studying at
Fitzwilliam Hall, Cambridge , he joined Sir W. G. Armstrong Whitworth & Company atOpenshaw , Manchester.Two years later, in 1921, he was appointed works manager there and later became works manager of Craven Brothers Ltd., the
Stockport machine tool manufacturers from where he joined United Steels.In 1951, in his second year at
Stocksbridge , he was awarded an OBE in recognition of his work in the industry.
