"Solanum cleistogamum" is known under the ambiguous name of "bush tomato". In the Central Australian language of Arrernte, this species is treated as distinct from other bush tomatoes and called "merne mwanyerne".

Native to Australia, it is a small fast-growing shrub in the Solanaceae family. It fruits prolifically the year after fire or good rains. The fruit is hard and green when unripe, turning yellow and sometimes purple when ripe, at which time they also develop a pungent fragrance.
