Novi Sad municipality (Serbian: Градска општина Нови Сад or "Gradska opština Novi Sad") is one of two municipalities which comprise the City of Novi Sad in Serbia. The population of the municipality include approximately 270,000 people.

Politics

Since 2002, when the new statute of the City of Novi Sad came into effect, City of Novi Sad is divided into two urban municipalities, Petrovaradin and Novi Sad. From 1989 until 2002, name "Novi Sad municipality" meant whole territory of the City of Novi Sad.

Today, municipality doesn't have its own offices. Municipalities of Novi Sad were established because of the sole reason that Novi Sad can get city status in Serbia. Future of this municipalities is questionable, because ruling party in Novi Sad (Serbian Radical Party) is against municipalities. Keeping in mind, that under new constitution of Serbia (from November 2006), city doesn't have to be divided into municipalities to get "city status".

By the city statute from 2002, Novi Sad and Petrovaradin municipalities do not have any real authority on their territory, Novi Sad's city government runs the whole city.
