Jonathan Reinarz

Jonathan Reinarz(born 17 February, 1970, Interlaken, Switzerland) is a Midland historian best known for his work on the history of breweries in England in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, as well as his work in the field of medical history. A graduate of the Department of History at the University of British Columbia (1992), Reinarz went on to undertake graduate work in the field of labour history at the Centre for Social History at the University of Warwick in 1993. The subject of his MA dissertation was labour relations in the midland printing trades between 1890-1914. He then went on to complete a PhD in the same institution between 1995 and 1998. The subject of his doctoral research was labour and technological change in the English brewing industry between 1870 and 1914. He is on the Editorial Board of "Brewery History" and is Reviews Editor for the specialist journal, "Social History of Alcohol and Drugs".

Since 2000, Reinarz has been a member of staff at the Centre for the History of Medicine at the University of Birmingham Medical School, which is led by Professor Robert Arnott and where he was originally appointed to write a history of the city's teaching hospitals, 1779-1939. In 2003, he received a Wellcome Trust University Award in order to research and write the history of medical education in provincial England, c.1825-1948. A major part of his research is to consider the influence of region on the development of medical education during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. If Reinarz has a single project, it is to incorporate the experiences of ordinary people, whether employed, or not, sick or infirm, into his historiography.
