The SH-201 is equipped with two analogue modeling oscillators, a multi-mode filter, ring modulator, and it allows routing an external audio signal into its own dedicated filter. The input signal can be altered as one wave stream but not as a layered track. Real-time controls feature Roland's infrared D-beam controller. The modeling and layout of filters, envelopes, oscillator types, and mix options are nearly identical to the JP8000. The name SH-201 is derived from Roland's classic SH-101 synthesizer. However the SH-201 has more in common with Roland's Jupiter line of synthesizers. The title SH-201 was mainly used as a marketing device to take advantage of the popularity of the SH-101.
