Tumebamba

Tumebamba

Tumebamba or Tomebamba, former city-state in the Inca federation, belonging etnically to the Cañaris faction. Known as the "second Cusco" (the Inca capital), it was given to Atahualpa when the empire was divided in 1527. Its fate was decided when the tribal leaders chose to follow Huáscar in 1531 (War of the two brothers) and betrayed Atahualpa. In late 1531 or early 1532, Atahualpa and his generals exaggerated his revenge, forced the city to surrender and had it destroyed.
