"Gold and Silver", a song written and recorded by Quicksilver Messenger Service, first appeared on their debut album, "Quicksilver Messenger Service". It is an instrumental track and features the most popular instruments of the Haight-Ashbury area (piano, electric guitar, drums and other percussion instruments.) The song is fairly long, around 6 minutes and 45 seconds, and is widely considered to be drummer Greg Elmore's finest performance on the drums.

Written by Gary Duncan, the song is probably the first example of jazz-rock ever recorded.Fact|date=February 2008 It is in 6/4 time and was inspired by Brubecks Take Five which is in 5/4. For many old Quicksilver fans, this is a definitive song which captures the amazing instrumental viruosity of the group, and explains why the band was such a legend.Fact|date=March 2008
