History
Darton Hall Senior School was opened in the village of Darton in 1935, providing senior education for 560 pupils of both sexes. In 1957, buildings were opened at the current Kexborough site, which then became the boys' campus, with girls remaining at Darton.
In the 1970s, preparations for the changes to comprehensive education in the area, combined with the raising of the school leaving age led to considerable developments at the Kexborough campus. By this time, the school catered for 890 pupils, with the first two years being spent at Darton, before moving to Kexborough.
Further changes came in 1990 when the sixth form provision was moved to Barnsley College. All pupils remaining at the school were moved to the Kexborough site, with the school once again maintaining a single campus.
In February 2011 the old Darton High School closed, and staff and students moved to the new "Darton College" building.
Campus
The school is located to the north west of Barnsley in the village of Kexborough on the edge of the open countryside approximately one mile from junction 38 of the M1 motorway.
An innovative, state-of-the-art new building opened in February 2011, as part of the government's Building Schools for the Future programme, and the school was re-named Darton College.
Curriculum
Since 2005, the school has been a specialist humanities school. It continues to provide a full curriculum in accordance with the National Curriculum for all pupils.
Ofsted Inspection
On 20/21 January 2010, the school was inspected and placed into Special Measures by Ofsted,[1] since then the school has made good progress.[2]
