Taft Stettinius & Hollister LLP is a corporate law firm with headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio.

History

The firm was founded in 1924 with the merger of two firms, Worthington, Stettinius & Strong, which had been practicing law in Cincinnati since 1885, and Taft & Taft, the firm consisting of Robert Taft and his brother Charles Phelps Taft II. The firm's labor department was founded by J. Mack Swigert who became nationally prominent after assisting the late Senator Robert Taft in the drafting and passage of the ground-breaking Taft-Hartley Act over the veto of President Harry S. Truman.

The firm has been heavily involved in the life of Ohio, having worked on such projects as the Cincinnati Union Terminal, the Carew Tower, Kings Island, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, and Paul Brown Stadium. The firm has also worked on numerous prominent matters for its clients, including representation of Pete Rose, the Cincinnati Bengals, the National Stock Exchange, Chicago, Gibson Greetings in its groundreaking suit against Bankers Trust involving financial derivatives, and the Cincinnati Masters tennis tournament.

Practice Areas

At present, Taft has over 300 attorneys. The firm is engaged in the general practice of law. Taft serves as general counsel for clients large and small, public and private, and whose businesses range from local to international in scope. The Cincinnati office is organized into four departments: Business and Finance, which handles general business, corporate, mergers and acquisitions, securities, private and public financing, real estate, banking and insurance matters; Labor and Employment; Litigation, which includes bankruptcy, environmental and workers' compensation subgoups;and Tax, Probate and Estate Planning. The firm's Labor and Employment and Litigation Departments have handled widely publicized and precedent-setting cases throughout the nation.

Recognition

Seventy-two of the firm's attorneys are listed in the most recent edition of Woodward-White's The Best Lawyers in America. Four of the firm's litigation partners are Fellows of the American College of Trial Lawyers. A partner in the firm's Tax, Probate and Estate Planning Department is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Council. Three of the firm's partners are Fellows of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. Twenty-eight of Taft's attorneys are included in "Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business".
