Super iron battery

The Super-iron battery is a new class of rechargeable electric battery.

"Super-iron" is a moniker for a special kind of ferrate salt (iron(VI)), this is, potassium ferrate (K₂FeO₄) or barium ferrate (BaFeO4), used in this new class of batteries. As of 2004 chemist [http://alpha.chem.umb.edu/faculty/licht/ Stuart Licht] of the University of Massachusetts in Boston was leading research into a Super-iron battery.

As a matter of history it should be noted that use of ferrate cathodes was tested and patented by Amendola {US Patent # 5804329, claim #19 et al] filed in 1995 as well as other patents.

It uses the same zinc anode and electrolyte as an alkaline battery, but its capacity is around 50% higher. [Science, 200-08-13]

Environment

Iron rust is nontoxic, preferable over mercury, cadmium, manganese and nickel oxides.
