Korattur (13 06' 48.95N, 80 11'32.87E)is satellite township in the northwest part of Chennai, India. It is a part of the Ambattur municipality and located along the Chennai-Mumbai railroad about 10 miles (16 km) from the Chennai Central. The place has developed from a calm village in the early 20th century to an urban township of today due to the expansion of the Chennai city and the industrial development of north Chennai. North Chennai is one of the major manufacturing hubs in India, housing the large railroad maker Integral Coach Factory, the big Ambattur Industrial estate, the Binny Mills and the battle-tank factory in Avadi.

Like most places in the region, Korattur was once famous for its lakes and water bodies that have now been encroached and reduced to a tiny pond as a byproduct of its development. The 992-acre sized lake has now become a huge pile of wasteland and a collection of urban sewage. This makes the place highly notorious during the October-December rainy season for water logging. It is not unusual for people to wade in hip-deep water in the roads during this time, caused due to sudden cyclonic downpour and improper drainage systems.

Korattur has a few good schools in this region, one of the most important school is B.V.S(BHAKTAVATSALAM VIDYASHRAM) in periyar nagar has a population of more than 3000 students and functioning from 1989, The school has totally more than 90 teachers and 50 staffs, the school has 100 rooms enough. next is Vivekananda vidyalaya and Good sheperd private schools, Corporation government school is at CHAVAADI ROAD.

There is one women's college in Korattur, the Bhaktavatsalam College for Women and the most coveted degree B.com is offered in this college.

Korattur is linked by public train and bus. Trains(EMU) starting from Central Railway station to Avadi/Arakkonam stop at Korattur. And city bus services are 7B from Parrys Corner, 23C from Thiruvanmiyur(via) Ethiraj College, 41D from Mandaveli and 47G from VGP (via)Besant Nagar.

The cost of living is not so high in Korattur as the rentals for 2 BHK will range from 2500/- month onwards to 4000/- only. For pious people there are few Hindu Temples,the oldest being Jambookeshwar Temple and nearby Thiruvalidayam in neighbouring Padi and two churches one Church of South India and one Roman Catholic. The other temples are Lakshminarayanan perumal(Lord Vishnu) adjacent to Jambookeshwarar temple,Nagavalli amman temple(38th main street), Pillayar Koil(next to police station)opposite to THNB and Anjaneyar temple(near bus stand) and Padavattaman temple near Lucas TVS.

Korattur - A township 3.5 km (2.2 miles) away from AnnaNagar West located just interior to PADI ,it nearly 1 km (0.5 miles) from PADI junction, easily accessible through Buses on route 7B (Korattur - Parrys) , 47G , G47 (VGP via Besant Nagar ) and 23C EXTN ( Korattur - thiruvanmiyur ) , 41D , D41 running from AVADI and Ambattur OT to mandaveli and now a days many shareautos reduce the strain in office hours taking people from - to PADI and AnnaNagar West, To the surprise, Korattur Bus Stand is now well laid by Thar road after a decade. Also many EMU Trains running to (T) thiruvallur , AJJ ( arakonam ) , TRT tirutani [S] siding passes through KORATTUR RS from Chennai Central,also blessed with lots and lots of trees which will give any riders to take a peaceful entry after a wild pollution drive. Korattur residents are well known for landscaping and gardening. As a result of improving , even Korattur did not escape the transformation. Many houses are now being demolished and turned into Flats and Apartments. An evening walk through the streets will give you pleasant experience.

Korattur has few CBSE institutions like Nalli Kuppusami Vivekanada Vidyalaya which caters to students of middle class family.It has been there for 30 years and has produced good candidates. This school instills high moral among students and it has good infrastructure facility as well.
